Electric wheelchairs are an alternative to manual wheelchairs as users can control it via controllers already installed on the unit. This allows them to not rely so much on their carers giving them confidence and independence. However, while electric wheelchairs are great, there are some tips that need to always be kept in mind to properly maintain the electric wheelchairs. Below are some basic tips on how to care for your wheelchairs.
- Charge your battery nightly to ensure a full day of normal use assuming the batteries are not too old
- Power wheelchairs that are used often will have longer life spans compared to power wheelchairs that are used rarely or sit idle for most of the day
- For power wheelchairs that aren’t being used for a period of time it would be best to charge them about once a month to keep them active
- Drain new batteries by 30% during the first 10 days, which will allow your batteries to achieve fully-charged status.
- Avoid depleting batteries by over 80% as it will quickly damage your batteries.
- It’s important to ensure that your tyres are fully inflated as it will not only help ease the rolling of the wheelchair; but also lengthen the time needed between battery charges, maximise your mileage as well as the life span of the tyres and tubes.
- On slippery surface extra care must be taken as the brakes on the wheelchair may not slow or stop the wheelchair if it doesn’t have the proper traction
- Use caution when travelling on sand or in snow as the wheelchair can get stuck
- Carrying a bright, orange flag will make you more visible in traffic and parking lots
By no means are those the only tips that are available as there are plenty more out there. However these are the basic ones that will ensure that your power wheelchair will stay with you for a long time.
