These are the typical crutches assigned to patients in recovery from ankle or knee injuries, most often for short term use until the injury has healed. They have a pad that is held under the arm, pressed into the patient's side during use.
Forearm crutches — The other major type of crutch is the forearm crutch, also known as the elbow crutch. These crutches have an open cuff that grips the user's forearm during use. Forearm crutches are typically used long-term and are commonly used by bariatric patients to increase mobility.

Sizing forearm crutches
Wearing your normal walking shoes, stand with your arms relaxed by your sides. Your wrist should align with your crutch’s handgrip. Your arm should be bent around 30 degrees when using your crutches, so aligning the crease of your wrist with the handgrip allows for this flexion. Adjust your crutch’s cuff to around 3-5cm below the crook of your elbow.
Sizing underarm crutches
While standing upright the top of your crutches should sit about 2-5cm beneath your armpits. Your crutch handgrips should align with the tops of your hips, allowing for a slight bend in your elbows when grasping your handgrips.
